What is a Composite Resin Filling?

Composite resin is a tooth-colored dental restorative (filling) material. It is made from a combination of a resin base and an inorganic filler. This material is used to “fill” in missing areas of a tooth damaged by decay or fracture. This material has almost exclusively taken the place of amalgam (“silver” or metal) fillings used in dentistry for many years. Since the material is tooth-colored, it looks much more natural as it matches the shade of the tooth surrounding it. However, there are other advantages to this material as well. As opposed to the amalgam filling, the composite resin is placed along with an adhesive agent to chemically and mechanically bond the filling material to the surrounding tooth structure. The bonding process restores a great deal of the original tooth’s strength. The bonding process’s nature also allows repairs rather than full replacement of the material, in appropriate circumstances, if a restoration is damaged.

How do you know if you need a composite resin filling?
