Why is Oral Hygiene Important?
Good oral hygiene eliminates bacterial microfilm (plaque) that builds up daily in the mouth. Without good hygiene, plaque will accumulate. It will eventually harden, becoming tartar, and that will begin the process of gum disease. The first stage of gum disease is gingivitis. Gingivitis is a reversible process; if detected early, it can be successfully treated, restoring the mouth to a healthy condition. If allowed to progress beyond this stage, permanent damage will begin in the form of gum recession, bone loss, decay, and eventually the loss of teeth. Many studies have shown an adverse link between gum disease and overall systemic diseases.
A good oral hygiene routine such as brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing combined with regular checkups will help keep your mouth healthy and prevent cavities, gingivitis, tooth loss, and other oral ailments.
Why Get a Dental Exam and Cleaning?
A dental exam allows us to evaluate your overall oral health and identify any problems in the earliest possible stage. A periodic dental exam consists of 3 individual services. First, an assessment is made of the condition of your teeth, gums and screening for any other types of oral lesions, including oral cancer. At this time, we will also point out any areas of future concern. The second component of a routine visit is the cleaning of your teeth. Plaque is easily cleaned by the patient at home, but hardened deposits (tartar) can only be removed by professional care. Thirdly, x-rays are taken at specific intervals (appropriate to patient needs) to detect any dental concern that is not observable by visual examination.
Any treatment needs will be addressed at the end of the examination. Treatment recommendations will be made, discussed, and explained to the patient at that time.

I have been seeing Dr Spence for more than 10 years, I think I'm ready to say something about that. I can not image having to go anywhere else, everyone there has been nice to me and my family, the care has been best I've could have asked for.
